In order to apply for the California Guard Card, you will need to complete and pass the 8-hour Powers To Arrest course.  After you apply and receive the guard card through the mail, you have 30 days to complete another 16 hours of training.   Then you have six months to complete another 16 hours of training to be fully certified. 

You will need to take 8 hours of training annually to keep your guard card.

If you want a firearms permit for open (exposed) carry, you need to take 14 hours of training.  It's an additional 8 hours of training for a baton permit and 4 hours for a pepper spray/tear gas permit.
